Steam Deck or Switch 2 for Cosy Gaming?

There’s something special about handheld gaming when you’re over 40. You can curl up on the sofa with a blanket and escape into another world without monopolising the TV or rearranging your entire WFH desk setup.

But with both the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Steam Deck offering a treasure trove of cosy, indie games and flexible play styles, how do you choose the right one for you?

The Nintendo Switch 2

If you grew up with Nintendo, the Switch feels like coming home. It’s approachable, family-friendly, and has that signature Nintendo charm.

Key highlights of the Switch 2:

  • Offers a 7.9-inch 1080p handheld screen and supports 4K when docked.
  • Backwards-compatible with many original Switch games, so your library carries forward.

Why cosy gamers love it:

  • It’s effortless. You can pick up and play instantly, no updates or settings to tinker with.
  • The exclusive titles are timeless: Animal Crossing: New HorizonsLegend of Zelda, Paper Mario, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, all play brilliantly on Switch.
  • The catalogue of cosy indie games is strong and growing.
  • It’s lightweight and travel-friendly, perfect for gaming in bed or during a commute.

“You can’t beat the feeling of curling up with Animal Crossing on a rainy Sunday. The Switch 2 feels like the perfect comfort blanket.” — @cozykatie (Instagram)

“I just wanted something simple after work. Just a few in-game days of Stardew before bed. The Switch 2 nails that.” — @pixelplantmum (Threads)

What might bug you:

  • The Switch 2 is pricier than its predecessor. Experiences point out that the jump in price may matter for budget-aware gamers.
  • While upgraded, it might not match the raw performance flexibility of a handheld PC–style device.
  • If you like mods or ultra-customisation, you might hit limitations compared to PC-based devices.
  • The games are more expensive, and there aren’t as many deep sales.

The Steam Deck

The Steam Deck is more powerful, more flexible, and gives you the freedom to tweak your setup; great if you’ve recently discovered PC gaming but don’t have the desktop setup.

Key highlights of the Steam Deck:

  • Huge indie game library via Steam.
  • Highly customisable controls, settings, mods.
  • Excellent for players who like to sit back, tweak once, then relax.

Why cosy gamers love it:

  • Access to thousands of indie titles from Steam, which are usually cheaper than they are in the Nintendo eShop.
  • You can adjust controls, mods, and visuals exactly how you want. Check out some absolutely gorgeous Stardew mods you can use with it here.
  • Perfect for games like UnpackingDredgeSpiritfarer, and Coral Island that run beautifully handheld.

“It’s like my PC came with me to the sofa. I’ve been playing Dredge and Dorfromantik in handheld mode all weekend. It’s magic.” — @cosyteagames (Bluesky)

“I love tweaking little settings, trying mods, and then just… zoning out for hours.” — @gamergirl400 (Instagram)

What might bug you:

  • Requires slightly more setup or get-up-and-go care (updates, mod tweaks, control configuration) compared to the plug-and-play simplicity of Nintendo.
  • Battery life and ergonomics might differ, especially if you push high settings.
  • If you’re seeking ultra-casual, minimal setup gaming, the Steam Deck might feel slightly more “tech-adjacent” than a Nintendo console.

So… Which Should You Choose?

If your priority is simplicity, then the Switch 2 is a great fit for undemanding comfort.

If you lean toward flexibility, choice, and modern indie experiences, then the Steam Deck edges ahead, especially if you’re comfortable with a little tech and already play on PC.

But honestly? Whatever console you choose, I’m pretty sure you’ll have fun!
